Pag Island is one of the biggest Adriatic islands with 285 km 2 of the fifth-largest, with long indented coastline, island with longest coastal line in the Adriatic, congested with bays, coves, beaches and capes. The cove of Pag is rounded marvellous 20 km gravel beaches. Pag is unique in vegetation in which almost there is no trees. Pag is the largest empire rocky and roughed with long walls on the Adriatic coast, where the grass is growing thin, low aromatic herbs, sage and immortelle. Precisely this aromatic plants is based on food of sheeps on the rocky ground, and it gives a special taste of the famous cheese of Pag.

Pag is one of the most fascinating barren landscapes of Dalmatia. A total of 8,000 residents live mainly in the two cities interesting Pag (2,375 inhabitants) and Novalja (1,950 inhabitants). It is known for Sir Paski and its lace embroidery in worldwide. The island of Pag is particularly popular at holiday party. Novalja attracts with its beach Zrće year thousands of young tourists.

How to get to Pag Island

If you come from the north of Croatia, it is better to use the ferry. This leaves the whole day around 06:00 – 22:00 clock by Prizna (located on the coastal road between Sibenik and Senj) on the island of Pag.

The second option to reach the island, would be over a bridge on the southern end of the island to the mainland (roughly at the level of Zadar). However, this is a very long way, if you go north of Croatia. From Novalja go to Zadar, due to the many hairpin bends and overhaul the few opportunities, about 1 hour by car, perhaps a bit more.

The roads on Pag are only partly developed. The combination of the ferry to Novalja is new and the road to Lun, however, is something bumpy. After Metajna and Pag is the road very beautiful.

Insight into history of Pag Island

The city of Pag was known from the period of 1443. until 1474. year. Due to danger from the Turks, who were at that time breakthrough to the Zadar hinterland, the city started to build a place that was called bays Katena. Since ancient times, and by the end of 4.Ct. the city existed at the place that was called Caska. Caska was sunk due to the earthquake, so they (PEOPLE) moved to the site considerably south, which is today called the Old city.

In 10. century, the city of Pag is urbanized; owns city walls, towers, fortice, squares, churches, monasteries, folk settlement and palaces. Pag name was first mentioned in the 10. century.

One of the most important event in the history of Pag is getting Bule king Bela IV. of the city of Pag awarded the status of free royal city of 1244. year. Croatian King Ludovik in 1376. y. confirmed Pag the right of free royal city and gave him some new privileges. Ladislav king, 1403., sold to Venice his part of Dalmatia, including the city of Pag. In this way Pag belonged Venetian Republic. In 1433. Pag gets its Municipal Statute one of the first document of its kind in Croatia. In mid-15. ct. danger of the Turks was all the greater, so population (1443.) started to build the new town, a place where he is today.

What to see in Pag Island

  • Monastery of St. Benedictine nuns. Margarite-Pag – monastery keeps valuable exhibits from long history of the island. There are a number of years been active Benedictine nuns which are processed to preserve the multitude of valuable items that are available today for a tour of the visitors.
  • Lokunja – this is interesting because of the shallow sea areas, for which there is a bottom layer of medicinal mud. This healing mud is already known for many years the inhabitants of the island, and we suggest that you go to such unusual swimming, where you’ll be able to try themselves as active medicinal mud.
  • Lun – that’s quite a small place that is known for its tradition of centuries olive growing. On the coast of the town is located Tovarnele port, and in the vicinity are the remains of ancient settlements.

  • Prince’s Palace-Pag – this is a nice ancient palace, can be seen in other cities on the Adriatic, paved white stone which are characteristic decorations on the windows.

Places of excursions near Pag Island

The old city of Pag – is located one kilometer away from the old town. There are numerous remains of walls and houses, roads and the remains of fortifications, but the best preserved parts are the Franciscan monastery and the Romanesque church of St. Mary. The church was first mentioned in 1192.Ct.

Sports & leisure time in Pag Island
