History of Omis

Omis is founded on the left side of river Cetina, beneath the steep hill-side of Omis Dinara. Omis is surrounded with river Cetina in southwest and with the sea in south and southeast side. So Omis is naturally well protected and that is why it was easy to defend Omis in the past, and also that is the reason why today’s Omis (located in a triangle of mountain, river and sea) is an unique pearl of Croatian coast.
Omis was built as down town of fortress Starigrad (Fortica) that was built on the top of the hill beneath Omis. Because of constant danger from land and from the sea Omis was in the Middle ages surrounded with city walls. On the east side the city walls were strengthen with towers and on the northwest side with tower Peovica (Mirabella). City walls that were protecting Omis were removed in the 19th century, but even today there are remains of them: east city gate and east tower Turjun. West city gate of Omis were removed in 1862.

During the history Omis was known as Oneum, Onaeum, Olmissium, Almissium, Almivssium, Almyssium, and during the domination of Venice Omis was known as Almissa. Scientists believe that the origin of the name Omis is Slavs word holm (hum), meaning hill, place on the hill, or historic city of Oneum was named after river Cetina that was known (in the time of Greek settlers) as Nestos.

In Middle age Omis was an important pirate port in the Adriatic sea. Pirates in Omis had fast ships and they also had naturally well protected port in a canyon of river Cetina. Omis was especially strong in the time when dukes Kacic ruled and other cities in Adriatic had to pay for free sailing. After Kacic, dukes Šubić were the lords of Omis, Horvat brothers that were under the protection of Bosnian king Tvrtko I, and after them Bosnian duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, then Banus Ivaniš Velipić and Stjepan Kosaca.
In 1409 Ladislav Napuljski sold Dalmatia to Venice, and Omis also fall under the rule of Venice in 1444.

After the fall of Venice, Omis was under the reign of Austria till 1805 and after that from 1805 – 1813 under the rule of France. After Napoleon fall, Omis and whole Dalmatia were occupied by Austria and that lasted till the First world war.

Omis was known as a dangerous source of pirates. About the pirate history testify Fort Mirabella and Fortica that have preserved till today. From Mirabella can be seen the entire Omis, and from Fortice Brac, Hvar, Solta, Central Poljica and mouth Cetina.
