Novigrad in Istria

The town Novigrad has developed in the 18th century, on the peninsula of Istria. Because of a long and significant history and many governments, Novigrad has preserved its medieval streets, an old town walls and towers as a remainder and a cultural heritage of the ancestors.
Novigrad is located on the root of the river Mirna and it is a peacefull town, an ideal place for those who seek the peace and joy in their vacation. Insight into history of Novigrad in Istria
Novigrad was a Greek and later a Roman colony. In the Byzantine period in the 6th century was called Neopolis and in the middle Ages it was an Episcopal seat. As it was under Venetian rule and Turkish rule later, the town stores their numerous monuments and evidences. This can be seen on the facades of the buildings and on the main square where the loggia is settled. Furthermore, the town’s history is marked by its status as a location for arousing power conflicts: Turks once confronted Austro-Hungarians; later Serbs took a strategic interest for the town during the latest Balkan wars.
Like some other Istrian cities, Novigrad was also created by the Romans after the old settlements — above all the Greeks — had ruined. Starting from that 6th century here settled the Emoner and named the place Emonia. Neopolis (old Greek: new city) was from the year 520. to 1831. Bishopric seat and played important role, since the desired Motovuner wood had to be exported.
What to see in Novigrad in Istria
Visit the 11th century crypt remaining on the Christian basilica of St. Pelagius, which was rebuilt in the 18th century.
Old part of town Novigrad pleases rather by the appearance of the old part of the town as by the collection of the rustical offers. The local centre stretches from the Veliki Trg by the Velika Ulica to their end. In the Velica Ulica, is placed the smaller business and at the Veliki Trg you can find Cafés, medieval buildings and the Basilica Pelagia in the old town. At the port are settled many small Cafés and purchase features.
You should visit the Town walls with their gothic loggia and the military towers. The loggia, the only preserved in Istria and probably originates from the 16th century.
Basilika Pelagia was built in 6th century. In the 18th century where built and brought into the church some objects from that time, which has determinate the baroque style like main altar, under which is hidden a Roman crypt and many more. Sarcophagus which has that crypt is from the 12th century, and there are preserved some Roman stone monuments as well as the rare notabilities. The side altars are made of marble and are from the year 1790.
Church of St. Agatha is the small Church has the direct exit on the city cemetery. It probably originates from the 10th or 11th century and has three sacral Roman apses.
Church of Our Lady of Karmela is the small orthodox church, which belongs to the city Novigrad. It is likewise reversed towards the city exit. This church is also placed by the cemetery.
Bank promenades & parks
Behind the Basilica lies the park of Novigrad Bishopric, which is also the starting point of a walking promenade. Here you can sit in the small café’s very close to the sea water.

- The Pizzeria Noe is a typical Novigrad’s Pizzeria.
