The island of Mljet is the largest island in the archipelago of Dubrovnik. There is a famous national park of Mljet, known as one of the last habitat of Mediterranean sea bear which is protected by law. The whole island is a natural attraction and is also called the green island, because of an untouched nature and lush of Mediterranean vegetation of pine forest.
According to legends it is not Malta, but the island of Mljet, in which the Apostle Paul suffered shipwreck and Ulysses succumbed to the nymph Calypso.

The acting otherwise enchanted island, 100 square kilometres, with its nearly 1,250 residents, tourists and are therefore not particularly interesting for those who seek solitude and tranquillity. Because of its two inland salt lakes and biodiversity in the west of the island is placed Mljet National Park, since 1960. Mljet National Park covers 1 / 3 of the island territory. Good 2 / 3 of the island are covered with pine and oak trees. They raise olives, herbs and wine. A special feature of the animal world in Mljet is Mungo, only occurs in Asia and the Pacific. He was snake-established control, but also other species decimated.

It is known by the many local delicates – goat’s cheese, wine and intermediate.

How to get to Mljet Island

To reach the island of Mljet is the best with the car ferry, which runs several times a day Prapratno on the peninsula of Peljesac and once daily from Dubrovnik, on some days from Korcula, Split once a week. It comes in the ferry port of Sobra. The ferry service between Trstenik (Peljesac) and Polace (Mljet) was settled by Jadrolinija.

History of Mljet Island

There are still present some ruins on the island from the Illyrian times. In 35 year BC. the Romans submitted and destroyed their city Melitusa. In the 10th Century dominated the Neretljaner Mljet, until 1151 the lord Desa the Benedictine monks of the island Pulianerordens donate it to Italy. In this time developed the settlements Prozura, Korita and Žara. 1345, the started the affiliation to the city of Dubrovnik Republic. During the golden age of Dubrovnik Republic, Mljet was split into two parts: the western part got the monastery, the eastern part of the farmers who are now themselves over the country. 1345 was a statute a legislative base, the rights, duties and responsibilities of residents regulated. 1493 Mljet got its own Rector. Until 1808 Mljet remained part of the Dubrovnik Republic.

Several churches were built in Gothic time in the 15th Ct.). The ruins of the church of St. Mary of the Hill date back to the period of early Renaissance. From that time are several typical structures like Renaissance palace of the Mljet duke in Babino Polje, some Baroque houses from the 17th to 18th Ct. in Korita and etc.
After rule of Dubrovnik Republic it was under several different rules which left many traces as a memory on difficult times Mljet has past trough.

  • Bay Saplunara

From the Cape Gruj (Rt Gruj) is spreading a magnificent view on the island group of Elafite.

  • Sobra-the main port of the island. However, there is the Pension Mungo with its famous fish restaurant, a supermarket and a petrol station.
  • Babino Polje-it is the administrative center of the island and the largest town with 550 inhabitants. The cultivation of olives, wine and fruit is the main source of income. Except for a costume museum, two churches from the 13th and 14 Century, the brass and St. Juraj and the trail to Grd Veli, the highest point of the island are recommended to visit.

  • Saplunara is located at the extreme southeastern end of the island of Mljet
  • Korita The village is located in a protected valley a few kilometers from Saplunara. It is not placed directly on the sea.
  • South West of Sobra, off the main island road Okuklje directly on the sea
  • Prožura is on the amount directly to the island road, while Prožurska Luka on a diversion down to the bay can be reached
  • Sobra has its importance by the ferry.
  • Babino Polje administrative centre is located around the island in the middle.
  • The Maranovići small town located high up on the island main road to Saplunara.

  • The road to Blato branches from the island main road to the north and leads to a fertile valley with the raisined Blatina lake, where the city Blato.
  • The city Ropa is above the rocky southern coast off the island main road
  • From the island main road branches off a side road to Kozarica, a small village on the rocky north coast with few houses and a dock
  • Above the Veliko Jezero, hidden on the mountainside, is Govedari
  • Soline, Babino and Kuće Pristanište Govedari belong to the region on the southwestern side of the island of Mljet
  • Polače is located at the northwest end of the island main road in a deep bay.
  • The tourist center is located at Pomena Sea on the north-west of the island.

The most beautiful beach of the island is near the Rt Gruj on the south coast in the south-east of the island! In the bay Saplunara find fine sand beach.
