Korcula Island

Korcula, a town and a port on the northeastern coast of the island, located on the peninsula, which is a narrow isthmus connected with the island. The surrounding coastal area is covered with pine trees. In the east from the port there is a small group of islets. Korcula archipelago counts 48 islands. Birth place of famed seafarer Marco Polo. The historic center of the island, there is a very nice position in the channel Peljesac, rich heritage and cultural heritage and tradition of maritime, shipbuilding, stone-masonry. Korcula is today a powerful tourist center, tourism on the island has a long tradition.
The island of Korcula (48 km long and max. 8 km wide) is considered as the “green island” of Dalmatia. In contrast to the Peljesac peninsula with its steep, rocky slopes on the island dominate gentle green hills. In addition to the usual types of agricultural use to grow citrus here, but the main branch is responsible for the 17,000 inhabitants of the tourism sector, mainly in the town of Korcula and its beautiful beaches. How to get to Korcula Island

On the island you can get by ferry from Split and Orebic Peljesac peninsula and catamaran from Split.
Direct ferries from Split and Drvenik on the Makarska Riviera and Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula and Dubrovnik to the island.

History of Korcula Island
Korcula Island has been inhabited since prehistoric. The oldest is from the old stone age, in Vela spili. Korcula is the first Greek colony called Korkyra Melaina, then Illyrian and Roman called Corcyra Nigra, then Byzantine and at the end was a Slavic settlement. Korcula has always been of great strategic importance for trade and territorial claims. Greek colonists brought here already in the 4th century BC a brisk trade from the locations Solona, the island of Vis and Trogir. At the time of Emperor Augustus the island was under Romans. Goths, Byzantines, Neretva pirates (see Neretva River Delta), Hungarian kings – all those reigned this places, and later almost all European nations: French, Austrian, British, Russians, Italian. Only in the recent civil war the Serbs spared Korcula of an occupation. In the 15th and 16th Century Korcula also played an important role for the shipbuilding. In the 10. ct. was a part of the Neretva principality, then recognized the power Zahmulja, Venetians, the Croatian-Hungarian king. Battle of Korcula fleet between Venice and Genoa took a place near the island on the 8. September 1298. year. It is considered that Marco Polo was born on Korcula in 1254. Marco Polo’s house, which corresponds to the territory of the early days of the Polo family. Korcula was under the rule of Dubrovnik, and since 1420 until 1797 in Venice. Since 1797 until 1805 was under Austria, then in 1806 Napoleon won the island and French until 1815 when once again fall under Austria. Since 1945 year was an integral part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, til the disintegration of the state when became a part of Croatia in 1991.
What to see in Korcula Island
You can visit the place of Blato, and see an interesting historical nucleus, where the summer held various cultural events and folklore. There is also the Vela Luka, the cove where you’ll find quality fish restaurants and you can see some archaeological sites.
- Lumbarda-8 km south of Korcula town and 3 km from the ferry port in Domince. The beach and the fantastic wineyards Lumbarda to make a mandatory visit. However, it is during the summer due to its popularity a bit crowded.

- Vela Luka-the second place with 4500 inhabitants is located on the west side in a large bay at the foot of the nearly 400 m high Hum. Only recently discovered by tourists, the major source of income is still from wine, olive oil production and shipbuilding. The fish canning factory is no longer in operation.
- Zrnovo-in and around you will find Zrnovo many preserved stone houses with stone roofs.
Excursions in the region of Korcula Island
- Mljet Island National Park – located in southern Dalmatia, near Dubrovnik, and is one part of the national parks. You can enjoy long walks through dense pine forests, maybe even see a mongoose, a small unusual animal that protects the island against snakes, or encounter a wise view of owl.
- Peljesac peninsula – the largest peninsula in Dalmatia, stone walls connect Mali Ston and Ondo, and are built with the intention to separate and protect Peljesac from the mainland. Visit Trpanj, a small fishing town known for its small, pebbly beaches, medicinal mud in Blacu with Dalmatian and medicinal herbs. Place Viganj, with Bol on the island of Brac, one of the most desirable destination for surfing.

Sports & leisure opportunities in Korcula Island
Here are offered many opportunities for all summer, water activities, like swimming or diving, and sailors will probably miss some interesting locations, since it is an island full of small bays which are ideal for anchoring. At your disposal there are diving clubs who are in the larger towns on the island. There are many cycling and walking paths to enjoy nature and the fresh air. If you want to combine sport and the chance for a trip, visit the Peljesac peninsula and the Island Brac. It is the best for windsurfing.

The island is mountainous, a good gear is required. There are always beautiful views of the sea and offshore islands. The Macadam-ways are not recommended, is a better mountain bike ways. A comfortable driving distance from the city to Korcula and Rascice.

Beaches in Korcula Island
Clean sea and its clear blue color will quicken everyone. Bays are in an addition to anchor, and ideal for refreshment after the summer heat. Here you will enjoy on sandy and gravel beaches. Among the most famous beaches, islands, sandy beaches are in Lumbarda and pebbly beaches in the port of destination Pupnat and in the bays Prizna and Bili Žal.
The south coast has gruff and steep slopes. The beaches are located in small creeks.
In Pupnatska Luka
A very good beach is Pupnatska Luka. The beach is a little difficult to reach, but those who get there will be rewarded with its beautie. The beach is entirely occupied with pebbles and is completely free in the sun also has an easy, flat entry into the water. Note: This beach is not accessible by car. It is the best with a mountain bike. From the island Pupnat branches street in a newly built road to Pupnatska Luka. But this road ends abruptly and only comes to a gravel down the steep descent. Nightlife and entertainment in Korcula Island
