Silba Island
The island Silba is in Croatia, in the northern Dalmatia. Silba Island is located southeast of the island of Losinj between Premuda and Oliba in Zadar archipelago. Silba has a surface of 15 square kilometers, and from the air it has form of octagon. In southern part “osmice” lies the only settlement on the island. In place of 270 inhabitants live, but during the summer months, the number is increasing and at several thousand. The island of Silba is one of the northern Dalmatian islands, 15 km2. The nearest mainland city is Zadar, with which it is administratively associated. The island is dogbone shaped, with the only village, also Silba, located at the waist. Total population is about 300 people. Tourism is the primary industry.

How to get to Silba Island
Boats and ferries travel to Silba every day from Zadar, and on some days from Rijeka, Pula or the Island of Mali Losinj.
A ferry also comes from Venice, Italy. The trip from Zadar takes about two hours.

History of Silba Island
The name of Silba comes from the Latin name (silva Forest) and was already mentioned in Roman times. The forests, however, fell under the axes of the Venetians. In the 17th and 18 Century the island start to live thanks to the sailors. Also wine played a major role, but by the occurrence of phylloxera suddenly came to a halt.
Croats are probably populated island Silba in 8 century. They are engaged mainly with livestock, and from 15. Ct. they deal with fishing. During the 18th century Maritime transport is very developed and it is reflected to progress and cultural development on the island. In addition to a number of sacred objects here was opened the first and oldest secular school in Zadar. Churches were decorated with works of art.
Napoleon’s occupation of Dalmatia 1806., resulted in the complete reduction maritime activities.
What to see in Silba Island
- Toreta– The height is around 30 meters and is located in the center. With him a beautiful view on the neighboring islands: Island Olib, Premuda Island.
- The old mill – the ruins are located 5 minutes from the center, covered with lush vegetation, and recalls the time when it was the only source of water
- The only cliffs on the island are located at Vele Stene.
- A small chapel is visible at Port Sv.Ante.
- The oldest church is St. Marko.
- Jedra – sculpture was built in 1997, as a reminder to many sailors, and sailors killed at sea.
Excursions in the region of Silba Island
- The pretty bay, the “St. Ante” can be found in about 30 minutes walk from Silba. The road branches off in front of the church towards the south and it is marked.
- Pernastica-the most beautiful beach on the island. It is located near Borci Promontory and can be reached by boat which is very atrractive to tourists, or by foot through the beautiful untouched nature.

Sports & leisure opportunities in Silba Island
Silba offers many possibilities for sports and recreation. This is an island for those who want a slow and laid back experience.
Walking is popular as there is no traffic on the island (including even bicycles in the summer).
Port Sv. Ante, is popular with yachtsmen because it is protected from major winds.
Sotorisce Beach has volleyball, basketball, soccer (football) and table tennis facilities. Rowboats can also be rented there.
- Tennis – two tennis courts with ambient lighting, can be rented
- Volleyball – on the sports fields located along the most famous beach Sotorisce, you can opt for comfortable socializing with beach volleyball, basketball or football.
- Windsurfing – can rent Mistral board and sail.
Beaches in Silba Island
Silba coast is characterized by beautiful pebble coves and hidden sandy beaches. The public beach Sotorisce is located on the eastern shore of Silba on the bay of Mul.
Many small coves with beaches can be reached by footpaths; Dobre Vode and Nozdre are favorites with those who prefer a more private experience.
- Pocukmarak – probably the largest beaches on the south side of the island. It is situated 400 meters from the center. The beach is completely pebble.
- Dobre Vode – a small, but extremely attractive beach. Away from the center is about 3 km and there is no entertainment. Until it can be reached by narrow side roads through forests.
- Nozdre – beautiful beaches, which consists of two small bays. One is completely sandy, and the other half pebble.
- Sotorisce – the largest and most popular beach on Silba. Sandy beaches, is located 250 meters from the center. Here you can rent sandaline.
- Pernastica – is not so popular, but it is one of the most beautiful beaches on Silba. The property is about 4.5 km center. It is about an hour’s walk north of Silba. A shallow sandy bottom and sunset views make it a popular destination.
- Carpusina – a small pebble beach with small mole ideal for those sunset. Since the center is located approximately 250m.
- Tratica – a small pebble beach on the south side of the island 200 meters from the center. Nearby there is a snack bar “Tratica.”

In the village there are several restaurants, two near the Eastern Harbour and others on the western side of the island. In the town center near the church, there is a good pizzeria.
At the bell tower is a good, shady Ice Cream.

Even it is a quite island, attractive to those who looking for peace and escape from daily stress, the Island has many restaurants, cafe bars, playrooms and bars on open where you can amuse yourself and find good fun. There is a Night Club “Skiper Club” and one Disco Club No.1.
Cultural events in Silba Island
During summer season are held many exhibitions which are usually located in side the park in its natural and beautiful surrounding. Here you will find various host exhibitions, musical and cultural performances, feasts, concerts…
The most interesting festival is the day of the Silba’s guardian, St. Joseph, when Silba celebrate ransome and buying itself from the inhabitants and time when they became free.
