Hvar Island

Hvar has always been one of the major islands of Croatia in terms of its popularity with tourists. It has a beautiful nature and a large production of lavender has been initiated in the 1930’s. Lavender island of Hvar, in June, is a flower-covered purple carpet. Also sage and rosemary grow in this mild climate. Nevertheless the island that includes 11,200 inhabitants is the most beautiful island in the Adriatic. Lonely bays and countless hiking trails can be discovered on the island again and again. The highest mountain on the island is 626 m with the St. Nikola. Hvar town is a major tourist resort, but remains a tasteful town offering one of the best preserved old cities in Croatia.

How to get to Hvar Island

Map of island Hvara
Hvar can be reached from Dubrovnik and Korčula, with a ferry that connects those locations with Hvar town. There is also a ferry connection between Stari Grad and Split as well as between Sucuraj and Drvenik. You are advised to arrive early with your car as queues for ferries are frequent during the main tourist season.

Insight into history of Hvar Island
Hvar Island is inhabited since prehistoric times, and later settled here the Illyrians, who came into conflict with the Greek force in 4 Ct.b.Cr. In Oglavak and Koščaku has lived Illyrian queen Teuta. Greeks are founded on the island of Pharos ancient city-today’s Old Town. Hvar Island had an important role in the time Illyrian-Roman wars, which completed the victory of Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, and Hvar, together with the entire Dalmatia, came under Byzantine power.
In the 7. century fell under the rule of Neretvian, with whom came in the composition of the Kingdom of Croatia. After the First World War enters the composition of Italy, to 1921.g. entered in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians and after the World War II became a part of the federal republic of Yugoslavia.
The Romans left few significant traces. The island was of big interests in the already turbulent country rich with history.
What to see in Hvar Island
Places to visit in and around Hvar town are the Franciscan Monastery just south east of Hvar Town’s ferry dock, with a beautiful church next door, the Citadel, a Benedictine convent as well as the church of SS Cosmas and Damian as well as the Church of the Holy Spirit. The Cathedral is a major site, and hosts a beautiful Bishop’s Treasury.
- Tvrdalj in an old town – one of the most famous buildings in the old town, resulting in the 16. century, where you can see the fish swimming pool, as well as a space for the birds.
- Civil theater – plenty of Renaissance and Baroque palaces, which are good for trendy holidays
Places of excursions near Hvar Island
Stari Grad is about twenty kilometers across the island and is a busy resort, but more relaxed than Hvar town. It has some places worth seeing, which includes the Tvrdalj, a summer house in a beautiful garden from the sixteenth century. Bianchini Palace is just next door and also interesting. Look out for the Dominican Monastery with a museum and a Tintoretto exhibited.
Other towns on Hvar include Jelsa, Sucuraj and Vrboska, small fishing villages, with hidden beaches in its surroundings, some are for single couples as well as naturist.

Sports & leisure time in Hvar Island
One of the main sport activities on the island is sailing. Sailing will fulfill your desire for sport and adventure, but also you need to enjoy a holiday in nature and in terms of who opens before you. Lovers of underwater activities will occur in diving locations, which has in abundance, and more advice can be obtained at local diving centers.

Beaches in Hvar Island
The beaches here are mostly rocky and gravel, settled in the bays, surrounded by pine trees or low vegetation. There are also natural sandy beaches, mainly on the northern side of the island. Shallow sandy beaches in the deep bays can be found on the southern side of the beach “Česminica” in Sucurju, at the end of Jelsa in the Mlaska bay.
Nightlife and entertaining in Hvar Island
Some bars, restaurants and cafés can be found everywhere, mostly near the waterfront and in the streets just off there.
On the island of Hvar the fun does not stop, since it starts already on the beach, then moves on after beach party who are organized in local cafes, and after that, after a short respite for easy dinner, the party continues until the small hours. All the fun is happening in the village of Hvar, while in other places, however, comes because of peaceful vacation.
