Gradac is a place in the county of Split. It is the tourist town of region Makarska Riviera famous for its long pebbly beaches. The settlement and the port Makarska, have been mentioned back in the 10th century. Population’s occupations are olive growing, fishing and agriculture, and lately are more occupied with the tourism which has developed into the strong economy branch. Gradac to its guests offers the longest and the most beautiful beach along the Makarska Riviera – Upper wave, and a small port which is well protected and saved from winds and thereof ensures the tourists and visitors to safely anchor. Gradac is located on the hill side and thereof has a natural pine woods shade. The surrounding offers numerous sport and recreational features, like water and inland sports. You can freely rent bicycles, pedal boats, jet skis and all other equipment necessary for your favorite vacation activity.

How to get to Gradac at Makarska Riviera

Gradac is located 40 km on the south from Makarska and it is the second largest settlement on Makarska Riviera. Since the completion of the high way/ A1, the best way to reach Gradac is to drive that highway up to the end of the road.

Alternatives consist the arrival to the town Rijeka and then to take the boat up to the port Split and further by personal vehicle or by bus to your destination. Another way is to take the train to the town Split and by bus continue to the destination point. Arriving by plane, you will come at the air port Split Kastela or in Dubrovnik Cavtat which are the closest points to Gradac. From the airport to Gradac you will be transferred by bus or by rented car.

Insight into history of Gradac at Makarska Riviera

This area was inhabited in the early prehistorical period where were found the evidences and stone remains from the Bronze and early Iron Age. In an Ancient time, Gradac was a Roman colony, and belonged to the colony Narona. The town was mentioned for the first time in the year 1649, and was named after the fortress located above the St. Michael Church. In the abandoned hamlet Čista above Gradac, was the seat of former Fragostin, where were found remains of the old tower from the 16th century. Around were also found the remains of numerous abandoned houses which were are typical architecture from that time. One of the oldest existing object on the area is the St. Paškval Chapel settled on the hill Plana. There are also an old parish church St.Ante, a local cemetery, a new parish church St. Michael, which was built in the year 1852. at the Gradina. Churches posses three marble altars with holy statues, among which the most interesting is the old wooden statue of St. Rok.

What to see in Gradac at Makarska Riviera

Gradac for the history and culture lovers, offers the fortress ruins where in the 17th century inhabitants defended themselves from the Turks.

In the place Podaca is the Baroque Church of St. John from the 12th century, and a tombstone with nice ornaments from the 18th century. In place Brist was born Andrija Kačić Miošić, a Croatian educator and writer.

You can enjoy in nice walks along the beautiful beaches, have fun on the hotel terraces that offer live music dance or just visit night club to have the all night long fun.

The village Gradac is situated on a small headland. On both sides preserve beautiful and long pebbly beaches. In the South of the peninsula has settled the town center with its beautiful waterfront promenade along the bay Vodice. North of the peninsula is Bosac, a bay with its long beach promenade.

The village has a church of St. Anthony and the Church of St. Michael, which were built in the year 1852. You can also visit the painting exhibition in the gallery of the Croatian artist Mladen Veže called the premises of the Franciscan monastery in Zaostrog, and a Museum as a part of the Monastery from the 15th century.
