DONJE OBULJENO

This is a settlement alongside the Rijeke Dubrovacka, a spectacular sea inlet, almost a fiord, in Scandinavian terms. This is where the rich Dubrovnik families build their summer houses. These houses require no air-conditioning in the hottest of summers, because of the cool breezes flowing off the River Ombla.

The settlement retains its rustic Croatian nature. There are many very old houses along the banks of the river, some of which survived the 1667 earth quake. Most of these houses are owned by Croatian families and have been in family ownership for many generations. Very few have been sold to foreigners, so the area is free of tourists.

The waters of the Ombla are about five degrees cooler than the sea, so swimming is challenging, in the strong currents.

Many of the houses or villas have the remains of renaissance gardens, with a few being restored to their former glories.

The area was occupied by troops from Montenegro in 1992, who wrecked the marina and other local buildings. The Dubrovnik locals painted the Croatian flag 400 metres up, high on a cliff face overlooking the marina. Do not hire a car with Montenegro plates – it will soon be wrecked.

A great place to walk, fish and admire the scenic countryside. The remains of the Dubrovnik Sarajevo narrow gauge railway run along the south facing slopes of the mountains and provide a spectacular walk. For pictures go to http://www.dubrovnikhouse.com
