Biograd

Biograd na moru is a town in Dalmatia, and it is located 30km south of Zadar in the Pasman inlet. This exceptional town is proud with its beautiful beaches, Mediterranean vegetation and sunny but also secret bays and coves.
It is popular tourist destination placed in natural surroundings which includes the nearby National Park Kornati, the National Park Krka and the Natural park Vransko jezero. Due to its position in the most indented part of the Adriatic coast, Biograd na Moru provides an excellent opportunities for nautical tourism.

How to get to Biograd na moru

Biograd na Moru has a favorable geographic position and due to that, it is easy reachable from all parts of Croatia and Europe as well.
From Split and Zadar it is reachable by bus and it also has good connection to other hinterland places and islands, too. There is an airport in Zadar, and a railway station in Sibenik. Because of good traffic conditions, Biograd na Moru became closer to the center of Europe.

History of Biograd na moru

  • The city Biograd na moru is already known from Roman times. In the 11th Century was built the Benedictine monastery by the Croatian King Petar Kresimir. In the year 1102, the Hungarian king Koloman was crowned in Biograd na moru.
  • Biograd na moru was the seat of Croatian kings and bishops, until the 10th Ct. However century by the Venetians has destroyed and rebuilt this Dalmatian town.
  • As Biograd na moru has felt into the hands of Turkish aggressors, the town was destroyed and rebuilt again.
  • In the inter-war period Biograd begin to develop in a tourist destination. The first guests were Czechs, in the twenties of this century. The first hotel was built in the village in the 1935, on place of today’s hotel Ilirija.

What to see in Biograd na moru

The most popular attractions in Biograd is

  • the city museum at the Promenade, which includes Roman and early Christian relics issued,
  • the baroque parish church from the 17th Century and
  • the remains of a Roman villa.
