Vrsar

At the mouth of Limski channel is located settlement Vrsar, settled on a small hill and is a picturesque village with the campanile placed at the top. It is beautiful and well preserved, peaceful place where you can enjoy exploring the amazing nature. The former fishing village Vrsar, with 2,700 inhabitants, has developed in an important and famous holiday center. The long tradition reaches up to the old historical summer residences of the Poreč bishops. Town is divided into two parts; one is the sea promenade and the other part is the old town and it’s placed on a hill. The part of the town placed near the sea is more modern and enliven with the people while the old town will give you an impression of an old historical village.

How to get to Vrsar

- Vrsar is directly because of the distance Pula – to Poreč and is good by the car to reach.
- There are good bus connections after Poreč, Pula and Rovinj. In of the city should one to the numerous and close one-way streets adjust itself.
- There is a large parking lot (liable to pay the costs in the season) with the gas station at the port.

Insight into history of Vrsar
The city got its name because of the old documentations that have raised many years ago. Over the centuries the place was called “Ursaria”, “Ursarium”, “Orsaria” and finally “Vrsarium”. Relicts of an old mansions and mosaic findings are still witnessing the important and intensive Roman time. In the middle Ages the city was surrounded by the Town walls, from which two town gates are still preserved. Also the castle and the early Christian Basilica are still evidencing the old historical periods. From year 983 to 1778, city was under the direct administration of the diocese Poreč, and becames however under the Austrian regency but in the 19th century. Further history is closely connected with the bishopric seat in Poreč.

What to see in Vrsar
The Sea Gate of Vrsar has remained as the last of the once fortified town and another preserved is the Church of St. Mary from the 10th century representing an important Romanesque monument. Visit also the Vergotini Castle, and the church of St Anthony.
Old town The Piazza Degrassi represents the center of the upper city. Many centuries ago the place was the central market, the seat of the bishopric salt works, and church square with the chapel which was destroyed after. You can also find Roman town-gate of the former castle. Eastern is settled a small Renaissance. Church St. Foska is from 17th century and besides is settled the Roman main city gate from 13th century.
This church represents the most important notability of the place and offers the most beautiful and valuable town mark. The building was built at the beginning of 19th century. The central craft is separated by the side pillars from the side crafts. The dome of the main craft was artistically decorated in the year 1946 by Antonio Macchi.
In the 12th century the Porec Bishop came to Vrsar in his summer house. Because of the high walls and towers the residence was also called the Castle. In the 19th century the castle was sold to one wealthy family Vergotini. After the castle restoration, the place was converted into the freeholds and sold.
The famous contemporary artist Dusan Dzamonja has the private sculpture park. It is settled about 1 km towards Funtana but unfortunately there are no regular working hours. For other sculptors Vrsar became the homeland, since the Istria has the rich limestone land which is very suitable well for sculptures. Marble from Vrsar is anyhow ideal for making sculptures because the stone is persistent on sea water.
Places of excursions near Vrsar
For the naturist lovers Vrsar has the suitable camps and the most famous is Koversada situated outside the town and on the south towards the marine reserve. The Limski Channel is another interesting natural site which is rich with oysters and mussels, which need to be tasted.

Beaches in Vrsar
Just south of the town on the coast is one of the world’s largest nudist camps, Koversada, which was one of the first, established.
Beaches in Vrsar The promontory Montraker offers some swimming possibilities. The entrance to the beach is infront of the parking lot of the Rade Koncar manufactory. From the Montraker one has a wonderful panorama view on the old part of the town and the port Vrsar. Here can be photographed an amazing sunsets of the region.

- In the summer the fishery festivity is held in the Vrsar’s port. The native fishermen sell their fresh fish. The celebration is held during the summer.
- The celebration “Festivity of sport association became annual”. This celebration begins in the morning with a solemn service. In the afternoon takes place on the Piazza Degrassi and sometimes in the upper city with live music.
