Senj

Senj is a city in the Lika-Senj county of Croatia, on the Adriatic coast. It is the largest transit point between Kvarner region and Dalmatia. Senj has a favorable position below the Vratnik mountain pass which separates Velebit mountain from mountains of Gorski kotar. Due to its geographic position, Senj is a typical and specific Croatian coastal town.
The old name of Senj is Senia, and it has always been mentioned as an example of brave fight against all conquerors. This area was under a rule of many governments like Turkish and Venetian and here are hidden many traces of ancient past. A cultural heritage is visible in charming squares, narrow streets and towers, and in hospitality of hosts which guaranties you memorable moments and excellent vacation.

How to get to Senj
Senj can be reached on the coastal road coming from Rijeka Jadranska Magistrala or Starigrad. Alternatively, you can exit from the Zuta Lokva Road A1 down through the valley to Senjska draga coastal city. Due to excellent position it has maritime connection with the Mediterranean towns and countries. It is linked with the hinterland by the roads across the Vratnik pass in the north, with the Vinodol Valley and Rijeka in the west and with Zadar, Split and southern Dalmatia in the South.

History of Senj
The town of Senj has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. The settlement was mentioned in Greek documents dated 4th century BC. The Romans called this beautiful town, Senia as a stronghold against the Illyrians in the 2nd century BC. In the 7th century in this place settled Avars and the Croats and after a while it became the property of the counts of Krk, and the famous Frankopans.
In 1469 in order to defend itself from the invading Ottoman and Venetian armies, was established the military that sheltered the town. In this purpose was built The Nehaj fortress in 1558. and is still preserved as a memory on that period.
The 18th century brought prosperity, especially with the construction of the road “Josephine” which connected Karlovac and Rijeka to Senj. The beginning of the 19th century, was the period of big importance, because of a great constructive works and it is the time when Senj became one of the most important settlements in the country. After the end of the World war II, Senj was under many changes. The old town center suffered a great damage in bombing and much of the valuable cultural inheritance disappeared. Still, there are some preserved monuments, making Senj an important and attractive place for visiting.

Senj is situated in a quite, preserved area, on a 70 km long riviera, stretching along. Senj has a beautiful clear sea and a number of picturesque seaside resorts: St. Juraj (“St. George”), Lukovo, Klada, Starigrad, Stinica, Jablanac and Prizna which are worth visiting. It lies bellow beautiful mountain – Velebit which is proclaimed in 1978. a world biosphere reserve by the UNESCO.
Due to specific and favorable position, Senj is a point of travel to all parts of Adriatic and hinterland as well.
