Pula and the holidays area around the Medulin promontory forms the center part of the southern Istria. In addition, the inhabitants are proud on the atmosphere of the city and its cultural variety.

The earliest traces of a settlement are present here for 35000 years. The Histris, an Illyrian race, established first attachments around 1700 b.C. Pula emerges also in Greek legends under the name “Polai” (refugees). The Histris were defeated in 177 b.C. by Roman troops and today’s Pula has a status of a Roman colony for a 100 years. The most important and most remarkable inheritance of the Roman time is surely the famous Amphitheater, which is well known. After the end of the Roman rule in the year 476, Pula belonged to the area of Ravenna, until the realm of Franconia took over the control in 788.y. This epoch lasted until 1331 , afterward Pula belonged to Venice until the 1797 and was more or less exploited. Only under Austrian rule meaning of Pula grew, primarily because the port had a favorable war position. From the First World War ’til the 1945 the city because of the contract of Rapallo became a part of Italy and in 1947 it was handed over to Yugoslavia (under Tito).

What to see in Pula

Once a Roman city, Pula is well known for its Roman monuments, mostly the Amphitheater. It was an Episcopal seat in 425 and bears sights from some early foundations of religious buildings, as well as other interesting churches, like the churches of St Francis, St Mary of Formosa, a beautiful cathedral from 10th century and the Church of St Nicolas. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Istria as well as the Twin gate, dating from the 2nd and 3rd Century and the Hercules Gate also. The Castle and a History Museum of Istria are also worth visiting.

The Amphitheater, the arena of Pula
Monumental Roman building is one of the most impressing Istrian objects of interest. For the building were used large oval solid marble blocks of the 132m x 105m x 33m.
At the Roman time here were held the usual Gladiator and animal hunts. The components of the seat rows were partly built-in later in venetian palaces. Today the theater is used for the most diverse free light meetings – by skirt concerts. The underground courses with exhibitions can be visited likewise.

Porta Gemina
In 2. Ct. was built a wall ring around Pula, which did not included the Amphitheater with. From the arena it is however not far up to the Porta Gemina in the Carrarina Ulica. By the gate you arrive into a pretty park, in which is noticeable a neoclassic building

of find from the time of the Histris, with the highlight of the treasure of king Epulon.

Triumphbogen Porta Herculea
Further down the wall ring is placed the oldest building of Pula (1st Ct. b.C.)-the Porta Herculea, which was established in honors of the patron saint of Pula. This old gate elbow leads west the Flanaticka into the old part of town. The triumph bent became around 30 ct.b.Cr.. Governor Salvia Sergius established as architectural monument for Roman dignitaries. In the building right beside the gate by the way lived the writer James Joyce, who worked in 1904 as an English teacher in Pula.

On the Flanaticka continues to come one to the largest market Istrian with a glass-considered market hall in art nouveau. Here is particularly large selection of fish and other sea animals, also meat and poultry, baking goods, coffee bars and restaurants that are placed in this multy-storey dwelling art nouveau building. At the place before the market hall domestic producers offers vegetable, fruit, flowers, honey and much more. The markets with textiles, shoes and souvenirs are not missing there also. Although there are many large shopping centers in Pula, a purchase at the market is still most favorable.

Sveti Marija Formosa
In the Sergijevaca is appropriate a small Gothic chapel from 15. Ct. Equal around the corner in the Maksimilianova stands the Basilica of St. Marija Formosa, which does not correspond however no more to its former appearance, because substantial construction units were stolen or used for the building of the San Marco church in Venice. Nevertheless mosaics are visible still. In former times the Byzantine Basilica has been just as splendorous as the Basilica in Porec.

Forum

Next in the Sergijevaca leads the way to ‘the Republic Square, also Forum. In the middle of the Republic Square is placed a 17 m long and just 6 meters wide ‘Augustus Temple from the 1st century AD.

The temple at the Forum of Augustus is built in the name of the goddess Roma and the Emperor Augustus. He was built it between 2nd and 14 Ct., when Augustus died. This is one of the typical temple construction.

The Temple of Augustus served as a grain silo. In the beginning of the 19th century here was the museum of stone monuments.

In 1944 he was almost completely destroyed during the bombing.
From 1945 to 1947, it was reconstructed.
