Makarska

Makarska is a city with more than 15 thousand inhabitants and belonged to the picturesque villages under Biokovo, Great Hill, Puharici, Kotišina of which was established the name of Makarska. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations of a Croatian coastal area, attractive because of its natural and climatic characteristics, diverse tourist offer and hospitable hosts. Makarska is known for its sandy-pebbly beach, long almost 2 km. Along the promenade surrounded by pines are placed various tourist facilities, comfortable hotels, restaurants with food specialties, and plenty of fun for children and adults. Makarska is located at the foot of Biokovo Mountain, which protects it of continental climate and has rich Mediterranean vegetation, a mild winters, long and warm summers with refreshing wind Maestral. Makarska developed around the natural harbor, which protects the picturesque peninsula. It is a shelter from bad weather for tourist yachts, sailors and excursion ships. This contributed in the development of an important trading port, especially during the Venetian and Ottoman occupation. During the summer evenings harbor is full of yachts and tourist excursion boats, a center of the city is full of youth who enjoy the entertainment and cultural events. Deeper into the night at the waterfront is all merrily, and bars, restaurants and disco’s are all full.

How to get to Makarska

Makarska is situated 70 km southeast of Split. Since the completion of the road/ A1 motorway, the best way to get to Makarska is to get off of the motorway at Sestanovac. From here you continue on the Jadranska Magistrala. Alternatives are traveling by ferry from Rijeka and Split or by train to Split. Those who arrive by plane, land on the airport situated in Kastela Split.

History of Makarska

Makarska was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Period, 8000 years before, which is confirmed by the cave located in the Great Bubnjavača hill. Numerous of them are located on the square Fr Andrew Kačića Miošića, next to the Franciscan monastery, on the mountain, in Donja port on the peninsula and St. Peter and they all confirm an ancient period. The Croats immigrated in the area between the Neretva River, Cetina and the Neretva principality, and after 13. ct. here rotated many rulers in the struggles for power. The last few centuries Makarska was under Turkey, Venice, France, and twice under the Austrian rule.

Venice left the most traces on the city appearance and at the formation of life of its inhabitants. During the forming of the nucleus of the Baroque city, residents adopted the European culture and connected with the neighboring regions. From that period are kept the Church of St. Mark, the Church of St. Philip, Venetian fountain, several late baroque palaces, and the Church of St. Peter, which is built on the foundations of the church from an early Christian time.

A part of the wealth of art and heritage of Makarska is kept in the City Museum and Makarska City gallery Anthony Gojak. Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary’s more than five centuries old, the monument has an exceptional importance, and Malacological Museum within it, is one of the most famous in the world.

What to see in Makarska

  • Botanical Garden Kotišina – located on the coastal mountain slopes of the mountain above the village Kotišina and it is an integral part of the nature park mountain. Mountaineering Association has highlighted the surrounding mountain paths, which are suitable for cyclists. In the village of Kotišina there are large castle walls, a property from 17. century, which impresses with its appearance.
  • Malacological Museum – Museum of the Franciscan monastery, founded in the year 1963. in which you can see a great display of sea snails and bivalves from the Adriatic and the entire world. More than 3000 samples of the shells in this museum can be seen not only from the Adriatic sea, but also many kinds from tropical and subtropical seas.
  • Shrine Vepric – devoted to the Mother of God Lurdskoj, and was founded in 1908. Mr. Bishop Dr. George Caric, who was buried here. In this sanctuary was built with the chapel sacristy, the altar on the square, confessionals, cruciate time, the house of spiritual exercises and paths for the procession. The main pilgrimage days are the 11. February, 25. March 15. and August 7. and 8. September.

  • Trg Kacicev

In 1704 in Brist (north of Gradac) was born Franciscan monk Andrija Kačić-Miošić who wrote philosophical treatises. In his honor was made a monument by Ivan Rendić on the square.

  • Franciscan monastery-beautiful cloister, a large collection of paintings and library. The shellfish is located in the basement museum, in the main streets of Mala Obala.

Excursions in the region of Makarska

Location of Makarska Riviera allows to its visitors half day and daily tours, visits to a number of natural, cultural and other sights and places along the Dalmatian coast, and its Zagorje islands, Hvar, Brac, Korcula, where they can try fish and other specialties in a beautiful natural surroundings.

On one-day trips you can go to Dubrovnik, the mouth of the Neretva river and lake Baćinskih across the mouth of the River Cetina and famous pirate Omis, cities under the protection of UNESCO; Split, Solin, Trogir, Sibenik, the National Park of the Krka river.

Especially interesting is a trip to the mountain that covers entire Makarska Rivier, and a visit to neighboring islands, too. There are marked hiking trails and slopes toward the peaks and Rilić Biokovo mountain. With car to the top of Biokovo you can come for half an hour. In the interior, it is recommended to visit Mostar, Vid, Imotski and Perth.

Sports & leisure opportunities in Makarska

Makarska has a plenty of different sports activities. On the sports complex Sports Center, there are playgrounds for football, basketball, rugby, handball, tennis, athletic and playgrounds for small sports.

“Hotels Makarska,” have nine open and two covered tennis courts, and there are active and 20 sports clubs and societies. The hotels on the Makarska Riviera have 7 closed and 11 open pools, among them is the Center for Medical Rehabilitation Biokovka with indoor swimming pool and modern fitness center and full physical therapy.

  • Yacht society ‘Bora’, the organizer of many competitions and events during the season and touristic participate in the Makarska cultural summer.

Trough the last years grew an interest in extreme sports: paragliding, sport climbing on the rocks, mountainous hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, diving, parasailing, trekking, Speleology … and only 30 kilometers from Makarska there is a city of Omis, the center of an active tourism in Dalmatia.

  • Beach Brela – located about 14 km northwest of Makarska and presents the longest and most beautiful beach in Dalmatia. Six kilometers of pebbly beach, which is indented in small bays, and covered with pine trees where is a number of beautiful houses and cottages that are intended for holidays and tourist yachts.

The main beach lies between the old town and the big hotels, nudist sites can be found in the south of the city on the beach Nugal. Sandy and pebbly beaches can be found along the Makarska Riviera from Brela to Gradac.

Nightlife and entertainment in Makarska

Makarska is known as a center of night life and entertainment in Dalmatia. Numerous bars, night clubs and disco’s guarantee an unforgettable times til early morning. In all places of Makarska Riviera, during the tourist season are held various cultural events, entertainment, sports and gastronomic events. These are the days of traditional local celebrations when rearguard glory days of the town and famous past of the city. In addition to local and Big Fiesta pageant organizers of the ‘fishing nights’ and other entertainment and sports events, which take place on the beaches or hotel terraces.

In Makarska all performances are included in the program ‘The Makarska summer’ of which are in most frequented Fishermen night, the Summer carnival and the Night Kalelarga. There are also other entertainment events and classical music concerts from the famous gangs, folk singers and groups from the country and abroad, which are mostly held on Kačićev square.
