Fažana

Fažana lies opposite the Brijuni Islands, in the vicinity of Pula. It is a small fishery town, settled amongst numerous pine woods and vineyards. It serves as a starting point for ships and shipping routes, mostly for the Brijuni islands. Worth seeing, above all, is the parish church Kosma, in which are saved paintings of the artist Ventura. It is the littoral town surrounded by the beautiful beaches, clear blue sea under the Mediterranean sky, which has contributed to the great tourism development. Valbandon and Šurida are the most famous places near Fažana whose inhabitants are well known for their hospitality and kindness.

How to get to Fazana

Map of Fažana

Motorway towards Pula is the exit to the Vodnjan. Drive the passing road straight and then deviate on the right towards Fažana and follow the table Peroj. The partial road droves about five kilometers and is surrounded by the olive yards and stone walls. In the background is visible the sea coast and the islands of the National Park Brijuni. The other alternative is: Turn on the motorway up to the local entrance of Pula and at the INA gas station deviate on the right towards Fažana, Stinjan. Until Fažana follow the road for about five kilometers.

Insight into history of Fazana

Fažana is a native Mediterranean town which has developed in the time of Mythical fliers when actually where some written documents about the town. From the history Fažana has developed naval tradeing and exchange of goods and services. The root of the word Fažana is Phasiana and usually is connected to the pheasant the land animal or the pottery. But still, in the old roman times has developed the crafting of amphorae and became very popular center. Fažana was constantly the passing point of many merchants, army and soldiers and a naval connection and trade route. More and more Fažana becomes important and well known not only for its amphorae but also for its home made olive oil and vine. In every old written document, especially during the year 1150 the settlement is mentioned as the Parish under the governance of Pula’s bishops. After changing many rulers and governance, finally was conquered by the Republic of St. Marco. In the 14th century, in the Fažana archipelago has befallen the battle between the Venetian Republic and Republic of Genova. After the Venetian Republic was conquered, the governance was taken by the Austria-Hungarian dominants led by the Napoleon ruler. The fight for Fažana lead up to the time when Fažana and the whole Istria became the Croatian part. Pula became the major merchant trade, naval and army base port of whole peninsula. In the 19th century, the Brijuni Islands starts to develop as the seaside and spa resort. In that time was built the first hotel and a small port connected to the Fažana port. Fažana once again developed the naval and trading connections as well as the various economy and traffic activities. Fažana has slowly but securely developing into an important and famous tourist center within the National Park Brijuni. Anyhow, it is an amazing littoral settlement with very strong and valuable history and culture.

What to see in Fazana

  • Visit the churches of St. Kosma and Damian which preserved the Venetian frescoes.
  • The Elias church from the 6th Century is established on the foundations of late antique land house. The church of Mother God of Karmel was built in the 14th Century and preserves the Frescoes from the 15th Century.
  • The parish church of St. Kosma and Damian is extended Gothic building with fragments of frescoes from the Renaissance from the 16th Century. The valuable painting in the church is a work of Juraj Ventura artist (1578) from Zadar.
  • Into the bay Ribnjak (Valbandon Florianum), 2 km south of Fažana, are placed remains of a land house from the 1st Century with lavish discovered mosaics.

Places of excursions near Fazana

Fažana is an ideal setting for the nature and fishing lovers. You can also visit Valbandon which has a small harbor and nice seaside places which are the ideal vacation places settled under the shade of pine woods.
Towards to the Peroj, you are passing through the woods of campsite “Pineta” where you can ride bicycle, walk or run and feel the scent of amazing nature.
Here you will find some interesting sights worth visiting, like the Orthodox Church of St. Spiridiona and more.

Go to Vodnjan and visit its 65-meter high bell tower, the highest one in Istria and enjoy in the magnificent view on the entire coast and nearby places.
Also is recommended to visit the Brijuni National Park where you can ride in the tourist train along the entire island and observe rare animals, visit the museum or just walk through the beautiful island.

Sports & leisure time in Fazana

Fažana has a wide sports and leisure offer. The following leisure facilities are very interesting and those are:

Beside all the interesting activities on the beaches and in the surrounding areas, you can try very adrenalin sport, the windsurfing. The wind in this part of the Istrian peninsula is present during the whole season because the favorable climate and location.

What to eat in Fazana

Fažana offers a wide coastal and continental cuisine which can be tangible and visible in various fish and seafood, pasta (“fuži”, gnocchi, lasagna, “pasutice”), pork meat (“ombolo”) and alike specialties. The typical Istrian wines are Malvazia and Teran stored in the local wine cellars.

  • “Istarska hiža”
  • “Vasianum”

In Fažana you have the opportunity to try the typical specialty, the Istrian soup (“istarska supa”), which is made of red wine, toasted bread, olive oil, sugar and pepper in the traditional pot.

Beaches in Fazana

  • Beach Bival: Is about 250 meters long and has the blue flag which signifies the extremely clean sea.
  • Beach Bi-Village: Is almost one kilometer long, and is settled in the splendid surrounding and shade of pine woods on one side and the National Park Brijuni in the archipelago on the other. It is a haven on earth for everyone.

Nightlife and entertaining in Fazana

Fažana has interesting bars and restaurants and similar places where you can have good fun. If you want to experience more fun, than drive to Pula (approx. 15 minutes by the car.) because it is the nearest town which provides numerous places where you can have fun till the morning.
If you prefer peaceful vacation and relaxation, than you can enjoy the view on Brijuni islands from the wonderful seaside promenade, from the hotel terraces or from the beaches which are settled along the coast.

Cultural arrangements in Fazana

Fažana mostly enlivens during the summer and offers numerous events which can fulfill your free time. Those are the: fisherman’s festivals, school of salting pilchard, Fažana brodetto festival, gastronomy festival “Fešta od kužine”, Roman Valbandon, competition in preparing dishes and many more are just one of the rich Fažana offer.

During the summer you can enjoy in the unique display of the “Museum in the streets of Fažana and Valbandon” shown on about 30 large boards, showing you the spirits and beauties of this charming town.
